Today a lot of attention is paid to digital TV both in our country and abroad.
DVB Project (Digital Video Broadcasting Project) is the organization engaged in digital television standards development for Europe. It was established in 1993 and now includes more than 300 member companies producing TV broadcasting equipment, providing TV broadcast and communications, research establishments, etc. DVB Project headquarters is located in Geneva (Switzerland).
The standards prepared by DVB Project are submitted for approval to the European standardization organizations. The adoption of the standards makes it possible to unify the television broadcast facilities, the element base of TV receivers and other equipment. This is a necessary condition for the successful digital TV implementation.
As a result of DVB Project activity there have been developed the basic provisions of the following digital TV broadcast standards:
- DVB-C for cable TV broadcasting;
- DVB-S for satellite TV broadcasting;
- DVB-T for terrestrial (i.e. conventional on-air) TV broadcasting;
- DVB-H (handheld) for the receiving of the TV broadcast on the portable devices.
IPTV is becoming lately more and more popular. This standard makes it possible to provide a large number of various additional interactive services, individual or group information messages and advertisements for specific users in accordance with their interests and preferences. IPTV systems are very attractive and effective for hotels and tourist complexes of all levels because they can be integrated with the hotel management systems, which makes it possible to provide the visitors not only with all modern digital TV services but also with high-speed Internet access from the TV screen, to receive hotel management messages on the TV set in the room, to make orders in the hotel restaurant from the TV screen, to monitor the bill for accommodation and services, etc.
In compliance with Geneva 2006 agreement accepted by International Telecommunications Union RRC in 2006 all agreement countries have to fully migrate to digital terrestrial TV broadcasting till July 2015.
Migration to digital TV opens the following possibilities
- transmission medium and radio-frequency spectrum bandwidth saving;
- improved standard-definition image (SD TV);
- high-definition image (HD TV);
- video and audio on demand (VoD, nVoD);
- interactive services, etc.
